The reason I initially thought of writing about traditional Oriental medicine in the first post is that my earliest memories are closely tied to it. When I was a child and had a stomachache, my father would use a simple and heartfelt folk remedy that had been passed down from my grandmother. While gently rubbing my back, he would say, “BABANDAREHENINARE” like an incantation. Along with this, he would hand me a Chinese herbal medicine known as “Tsumura No. 99,” and tell me, “This one is delicious,” as I drank it. I also received Chinese herbal medicine often when I caught a cold. For me, Oriental medicine is associated with warm and nostalgic memories like these.

Furthermore, when I was a university student, my grandmother, who was likely over 90 years old at the time, suddenly experienced discomfort and flushed in the face. My father quickly arrived and said, “She’s having an upward surge of energy.” He massaged the soles of her feet, and after a while, my grandmother felt relieved and drifted off to sleep. I was studying gagaku (Japanese classical music) during my university days, and I also witnessed an incident where my gagaku teacher, who had developed a sudden backache, was treated with acupuncture by my father. The teacher was able to stand up immediately in front of my eyes. Through these experiences, I feel that the incredible power of Oriental medicine has been deeply engraved in my heart.
